Michigan Continuing Education
Core CE Requirements
Individual Resident Insurance Producers must earn 24 hours of approved CE course credit every 2 years. Of this 24 hour requirement, 3 hours must be qualified as Ethics.
Additional and Special Requirements
Annuity Suitability Requirement: Effective June 1, 2013: All producers currently licensed to sell, solicit, and negotiate annuity products must complete a one-time annuity training course approved for at least 4 hours by December 1, 2013. All producers licensed on or after June 1, 2013 must complete this training prior to selling, soliciting, or negotiating such products.
Long Term Care Requirement: Effective February 22, 2016, an individual shall not sell, solicit, or negotiate long-term care insurance unless the individual is licensed for accident and health or life, and has completed a one-time long-term care training course by February 22, 2017, as described in Public Act 198. The one-time long-term care training course must not be less than 8 hours. The ongoing training must not be less than 4 hours and must be completed every 2-year CE review period after the completion of the one-time 8-hour training course.
Flood Requirement: All agents who sell federal flood insurance policies must complete a one-time 3-hour flood insurance course.
CE Process
Producers can take courses from any license type to complete their CE. Courses may not be taken for credit more than once in each renewal. Carryover of excess hours is not allowed in Michigan.
The compliance date is the first day of the agent's birth month—NOT the actual birthday--every 2 years. Producers born in even years renew in even years; producers born in odd years renew in odd years.
Michigan allows self-study (both paper correspondence and online) and classroom courses; self-study courses require the completion of an exam. If the final exam is not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of retakes.
Self-study exams must be monitored. A self-study course monitor (or proctor) must be a disinterested third party (i.e. someone who is not a relative or someone with a financial stake in the person taking the exam ).
CE credits are processed by the CE provider; providers are given 30 days in which to file earned credits.
